Surveying diverse art works that feature the depiction or replication of "evidence" left in the wake of crimes and natural disasters, this catalogue presents photographs, sculptures, installations and paintings produced since the mid-1960s by John Baldessari, Edward Ruscha, Vija Celmins, Barry Le Va, Bruce Nauman, Chris Burden, Eileen Cowin, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy and 30 other California artists. Three essays illustrated with numerous related images explore the cultural, political, philosophical and artistic issues reflected in the "forensic aesthetic" of the featured works, which range from documentary photographs of crime scenes to an installation of mechanically animated body bags.
