JIRI GEORG DOKOUPIL: SOMETHING STRANGE AND FANTASTIC. Palais Liechtenstein, Vienna, 1997. Organized and published by Museum moderner Kunst, Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna. 172 pp. with 153 ills. (57 col.). 28 x 22 cm. ISBN 3900776652 Bilingual in German and English (complete entries in German only).
Reviewing in detail the provocative, stylistically eclectic oeuvre of Czech-born artist Dokoupil (b. 1954), this catalogue presents fine reproductions of 51 paintings and six sculptures dating from 1982 to 1997 along with six well-illustrated critical essays exploring the subversive social, philosophical and aesthetic attitudes reflected in the artist's works, which include surrealistic drawings dominated by floral and sexual imagery, expressive abstract canvases marked with colorful tire tracks, totemic assemblages of bronze fruits and vegetables, and blurry photo-based depictions of nudes, refugees and crowded beach scenes painted with milk or soot.
