ART CAN SEE: LES LEVINE -- MEDIENSKULPTUR/MEDIA SCULPTURE. Ed. by Johann-Karl Schmidt. Galerie der Stadt Stuttgart, 1997. Published by Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern. Distributed in the U.S.A. by D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, New York. 180 pp. with 240 col. ills. 25 x 32 cm. LC 98-141741 ISBN 3893229132 Bilingual in German and English (brief entries in German only, annotated chronology of works in English only).
Surveying works produced over the past three decades by a prominent figure in the evolution of contemporary media-based art, this well-illustrated catalogue presents examples of Levine's videos and video installations of the 1960s and 70s along with extensive photographic documentation of the billboard campaigns mounted by the Dublin-born Canadian-American artist (b. 1935) in cities throughout Europe and the United States since 1982. Three critical essays explore the socio-cultural, political, ecological and aesthetic concerns informing Levine's billboard works, which combine reductive, coloring book-like images with brief textual commands.
