Investigating the central role of musical motifs in the abstract oeuvre of renowned Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chillida (b. 1924), this catalogue showcases some 40 sculptures and numerous related works on paper produced by the artist from 1953 to 1996, the selection including deeply incised monolithic stone blocks as well as many open-form pieces in steel that feature rhythmic configurations of arcing forms. An interview with the artist augments two critical essays discussing in detail the spiritual and aesthetic concerns manifested in Chillida's musical imagery and tracing references in his work to specific composers and philosophical writings.
