This two-volume catalogue combines a thorough critical study of the career of Cuban-born American artist Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996) with a comprehensive pictorial review of his singular conceptual oeuvre, which ranges from installations variously composed of bead curtains, piles of wrapped candy and large stacks of paper imprinted with simple images and texts to large-scale photographs of water and sky and graph drawings charting the results of blood tests. Five critical essays discussing the interplay of private and public perspectives in Gonzalez-Torres's work, his politicization of the strategies of Minimalism and his consistent subversion of traditional concepts of artistic authenticity and authorship are presented in the first volume, while the second comprises an illustrated catalogue raisonne of 281 works produced by the artist from 1986 to 1995. As of 11/03, this title is no longer available from DAP.
