ZONES OF EXPERIENCE: THE ART OF LARRY BELL. Albuquerque Museum, 1997. 160 pp. with 167 ills. (108 col.). 31 x 23 cm. In English.
A substantial study of the career of one of the leading figures in the Los Angeles art world of the 1960s and early 70s, this catalogue features excellent reproductions of more than 100 sculptures, paintings and other works produced by Bell (b. 1939) from 1959 to 1996, including early hard-edge canvases and glass-sided cubes, maze-like installations of free-standing glass panels, and recent large-scale laminated collages formed from newsprint, cellophane and other materials. An essay by Bell discussing his career-long experiments with the interplay of light, surface and space supplements four texts examining the artist's formative years in Los Angeles and the complex perceptual principles reflected in his elegantly simplified works.
