This scholarly examination of the civilization of Dacia (an ancient region of Central Europe roughly encompassed by the present-day borders of Romania) features clear illustrations of hundreds of artifacts drawn from Romanian museums, among them gold and silver ornaments, coins, ceremonial armor, ceramic vessels and figurines, tools and other objects dating from the Iron Age to the 2nd century A.D., when the Dacians were finally subjugated by the Romans. Twenty-five essays discuss the Thracian origins of the Dacian people, the evolution of their art and architecture, the Greek, Scythian, Celtic and Roman influences on their culture, and their religion, social structure and monetary systems.
