LUIGI VERONESI: RATIONALISTISCHE ABSTRAKTION/RATIONALISTIC ABSTRACTION, 1927-1996. Ed. by Klaus Wolbert. Institut Mathildenhohe, Darmstadt, 1997. Published in association with Edizioni Gabriele Mazzotta, Milan. 302 pp. with 273 ills. (213 col.). 31 x 25 cm. ISBN 8820212064 Bilingual in German and English (many entries in German only).
Reviewing in detail the achievements of a painter and theorist who played a pioneering role in the development of geometric abstraction in Italy, this catalogue features fine reproductions of some 130 paintings, drawings and prints produced by Veronesi (b. 1908) from 1932 to 1996 while also presenting examples of his stage and costume designs, experimental photograms and decorative art objects, many of the works featuring elegantly balanced configurations of overlapping spheres and lines. Four texts by Veronesi are accompanied by seven essays and two interviews with the artist, highlighting his career-long exploration of abstract spatial harmonies, the development of his color theories, and his application of the principles of non-objective painting to his work in other media.
