ALFRED HRDLICKA: SCULPTURES, DRAWINGS, PRINTS, 1945-1997. Ed. by Klaus Klemp and Peter Weiermair. Frankfurter Kunstverein and Stadtische Galerie im Karmeliterkloster, Frankfurt am Main, 1997. Published in association with Edition Stemmle AG, Kilchberg/Zurich. 192 pp. with 139 ills. (84 col.). 26 x 25 cm. ISBN 3908162750 In English.
Surveying the psychologically charged oeuvre of prominent Austrian sculptor and draughtsman Hrdlicka (b. 1928), this catalogue features good reproductions of 23 sculptures and 100 works on paper spanning the artist's career, including roughly carved stone and bronze images of contorted figures and expressively rendered drawings and prints depicting scenes of violence and lust inspired by historical, religious and classical narratives. Two concise critical essays are amplified by a substantial interview in which Hrdlicka elucidates the philosophical, political and aesthetic issues informing his disquieting portrayals of human suffering.
