OP ART/FASHION. Guggenheim Museum SoHo, New York, 1997. Organized in association with Biennale di Firenze, Florence. Published in association with Skira editore, Milan. 350 pp. with 333 ills. (215 col.). 28 x 24 cm. In English.
Documenting an expanded version of an exhibition originally mounted as part of the 1996 Florence Biennale (Looking at Fashion, Worldwide 25836), this catalogue illuminates interconnections between art and fashion in the 20th century through a presentation of garments designed by such artists as Giacomo Balla, Natalia Goncharova, Sonia Delaunay and Lucio Fontana; sculptures, photographs, paintings and other works featuring clothing motifs by James Lee Byars, Franz Erhard Walther, Vito Acconci, Rosemarie Trockel, Judith Shea, Jan Fabre, Jana Sterbak and other postwar figures; and a series of diverse collaborative pieces created for the show by seven artist-designer teams. Excellent reproductions of the exhibited works are accompanied by ten essays that include discussions of the role of fashion in the Futurist, Surrealist and Op art movements, an examination of Delaunay's avant-garde garment designs, and an analysis of gender-related issues underlying the use of fashion imagery in contemporary art.
