JUAN MUNOZ: MONOLOGOS Y DIALOGOS/MONOLOGUES & DIALOGUES. James Lingwood. Palacio de Velazquez, Madrid, 1996. Organized and published by Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid. 180 pp. with 83 ills. (40 col.). 28 x 23 cm. ISBN 8480260734 Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Surveys the varied figurative oeuvre of noted Spanish artist Munoz (b. 1953) through a presentation of some 40 sculptures and 25 works on paper and canvas dating from 1984 to 1996, the selection ranging from small-scale iron balconies mounted on blank walls and drawings of dark, unpeopled interiors to evocative installations featuring ensembles of naturalistic and surrealistic human figures cast in bronze or resin. A brief critical essay supplements two texts by Munoz and a series of four interviews in which the artist illuminates the formal and existential concerns reflected in his work.
