Focused on a seminal series of early works by well-known American conceptual artist Baldessari (b. 1931), this catalogue presents more than 50 photo-based and text paintings dating from 1966 to 1969 along with eleven related pieces created specifically for the exhibition, many of the compositions featuring ironic commentaries on art or captioned snapshots of the artist's hometown of National City, California. A lengthy interview with Baldessari augments eight concise essays illuminating philosophical and aesthetic concerns reflected in his experimental use of language and photographic images.
