A detailed review of the pioneering oeuvre of renowned Italian artist Alberto Burri, this catalogue features excellent reproductions of more than 100 works dating from 1945 to 1992 that consist primarily of highly textured, collage-like compositions in which torn, crumpled or charred pieces of burlap, plastic or wood are combined to form evocative organic abstractions. Eight essays and two interviews with the artist illuminate the independent but influential role played by Burri in the evolution of postwar abstract art, discussing the significance of his career-long experimentation with unconventional materials and techniques, tracing the varied critical interpretations of his images, and analyzing key series of works.
