PATERSON EWEN. Ed. by Matthew Teitelbaum. Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, 1996. Published in association with Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver. 192 pp. with 119 ills. (46 col.). 29 x 25 cm. LC 98-199448 ISBN 1550545140 In English.
A substantial examination of the oeuvre of noted Canadian painter Ewen (b. 1925), this catalogue features fine reproductions of some 80 paintings, drawings and mixed-media pieces dating from 1947 to 1994 that include early gestural landscapes and interiors reflecting the influence of Bonnard, lyrical compositions of lines draped across monochromatic fields from the late 1960s, and many expressive, abstracted images of cloud formations, eclipses and other celestial phenomena that have dominated the artist's output since the early 70s. An extensive chronology of Ewen's career incorporating critical commentaries and statements by the artist augments a biographical essay and a detailed critical overview of the artist's stylistic development and his independent position in postwar Canadian art.
