ERRO: VON MAO BIS MADONNA (Erro: From Mao to Madonna). Palais Liechtenstein, Vienna, 1996. Organized and published by Museum moderner Kunst, Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna. 216 pp. (two foldout) with 128 ills. (53 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 96-208063 ISBN 3854152000 Bilingual in German and English.
Documenting the career of a Paris-based Icelandic artist who employs pictorial cliches drawn from popular culture and art history to form satirical commentaries on political and social themes, this catalogue features fine reproductions of 53 paintings produced by Erro (Gudmundur Gudmundsson, b. 1932) from 1974 to 1996, including cartoon-like depictions of Chinese revolutionaries at famous tourist sites around the world, group portraits in which American astronauts are posed with female nudes appropriated from old master paintings, dynamic renderings of women superheroes, and densely chaotic tableaux featuring images of international political figures. A brief essay by Erro augments four critical texts examining the narrative style of his work, his links to American Pop art, and the socio-political and art historical themes explored in his iconoclastic compositions.
