Presents an extensive review of the achievements of well-known German-born artist Piene (b. 1928), a co-founder of the experimental Zero group in 1957 whose oeuvre -- encompassing paintings, kinetic sculptures and multimedia performances -- embodies an inventive exploration of technology, light as an artistic medium, and public art. Eight texts discussing Piene's career, his innovative techniques and his long tenure as director of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT are accompanied by excellent reproductions of some 150 works created by the artist from 1952 to 1995, the selection ranging from evocative abstractions composed of patterns of candle soot on canvas to "Sky Events" incorporating laser projections and monumental airborne inflatables.
