Presenting reproductions and individual discussions of 80 drawings produced by Clerisseau over the course of his career, this catalogue highlights the achievements of a French artist and architect whose renderings of real and imaginary ruins, Roman buildings and ancient decorative motifs played a key role in the international dissemination of the Neo-Classical style. Ten essays include a history of the Hermitage's extensive collection of drawings by Clerisseau and discussions of the artist's long sojourns in Rome, his studies of Roman ruins in France, his influence on the development of the "Arabesque" decorative style and his unrealized architectural projects for Catherine the Great of Russia.
