Highlighting the achievements of a once widely acclaimed history painter whose oeuvre has been largely neglected since his death, this catalogue includes a chronicle of Rothermel's career in Philadelphia along with reproductions (many accompanied by detailed commentaries) of some 65 paintings, drawings and oil sketches executed by the artist from 1837 to 1884, the selection encompassing portraits, figure studies and illustrations of biblical and literary scenes as well as numerous colorful, dramatically composed tableaux depicting events in the American Revolution and the exploration of the New World.
