Exploring stylistic and thematic affinities between the works of three late 19th-century Norwegian women painters and pieces created by the country's current generation of women artists, this catalogue presents fine reproductions of 20 portraits, landscapes and domestic interiors executed in the 1880s and 1890s by Harriet Backer, Kitty Kielland and Asta Norregaard along with illustrations of sculptural screens in twisted metal, symbolic paintings of female nudes and other compositions by six contemporary figures. Three essays review the achievements and concerns of women artists in Norway over the past century, profile the careers of Backer, Kielland and Norregaard, and discuss the art historical, existential and gender-related issues informing the work of the featured contemporary artists.
