Illuminating the impact of the Second World War on the thematic and stylistic progression of European art, this catalogue documents an exhibition of 48 paintings, drawings and sculptures by Klee, Magritte, Picasso, Miro, Ernst, Ubac, Giacometti, Dubuffet, Van Velde and eight other prominent figures whose works were selected to illustrate both the prevalent artistic trends in prewar Europe and the new forms of expression that emerged in the early postwar period. An extensive text contrasts the spirit of liberation and images of flight central to Surrealism and other interwar art movements with the subterranean symbolism and insistent physicality of works produced in the War's aftermath.
