BRETT WHITELEY: ART & LIFE. Barry Pearce et al. Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 1995. Published in the U.S.A. in association with Thames and Hudson Inc., New York. 252 pp. with 221 ills. (167 col.). 29 x 27 cm. LC 95-60476 ISBN 0500092524 In English.
Documenting the first major retrospective of Whiteley's provocative oeuvre, this catalogue features excellent full-page reproductions of more than 160 paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures produced by the celebrated Australian artist (1939-1992) from 1957 to 1989, including early nature-based abstractions, violently distorted nudes bearing affinities to the works of Bacon, symbolic animal and bird images, and dynamic landscapes, interiors and still lifes often infused with visionary elements. A substantial essay examining the thematic and stylistic development of Whiteley's work in the light of his turbulent personal life is augmented by a discussion of his early career in London during the 1960s and an interview with his widow.
