Presenting a virtually comprehensive survey of the provocative installations created by well-known Russian expatriate artist Kabakov (b. 1933) from 1983 to 1995, this catalogue features photographs and preparatory drawings of 70 large-scale works that frequently embody complex commentaries on life in the Soviet Union, many of the pieces resembling domestic or institutional environments filled with extensive displays of documents, household implements or Socialist Realist-style paintings. Three critical essays, an interview with Kabakov and a text by the artist outlining his concept of the "total installation" are augmented by descriptions of the featured works and transcriptions of the texts they incorporate.
