RICHARD & MARIA COSWAY: REGENCY ARTISTS OF TASTE AND FASHION. Stephen Lloyd et al. Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, 1995. Published by National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh. 144 pp. with 139 ills. (102 col.). 30 x 25 cm. ISBN 0903598531 In English.
Documenting the achievements and glamorous lives of two British artists whose works evoke the fashionable world of early Regency society, this catalogue provides fine reproductions of some 50 elegant miniatures and 27 drawings and easel paintings by portraitist Richard Cosway (1742-1821) while also illustrating a small selection of rarely exhibited canvases and prints by his wife Maria (1760-1838) and some 20 diverse pieces by their contemporaries. An extensive text examining in detail Richard's highly successful career as a painter and Maria's activities as an artist, teacher, musician and salon hostess is supplemented by two essays profiling the cultural milieu of late 18th-century London and examining the styles of dress depicted in the featured portraits.
