Surveying works produced from 1960 to 1994 by an American artist whose individualistic oeuvre embodies a synthesis of Dadaist, Conceptual and Minimalist principles, this catalogue presents photographic documentation of some 30 actions staged by Byars (1932-1997) over the past three decades along with reproductions of nearly 120 sculptures and other works that range from gilded, marble and glass spheres and columns to ephemeral text pieces. Augmented by an extensive chronology of Byars's career, five essays explore the philosophical, spiritual and aesthetic values informing the artist's pursuit of "the perfect," discussing his preoccupation with themes of death and transcendence, his links with the Fluxus movement, and the influence on his work of Zen Buddhism and the Japanese No theater.
