CHAMBRES POUR DUBUFFET/ROOMS FOR DUBUFFET. Chateau de Villeneuve, Fondation Emile Hugues, Vence, 1995. Published in association with Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 160 pp. with 103 ills. (82 col.). 22 x 17 cm. ISBN 2711832112 Bilingual in French and English.
This small-format catalogue surveys the oeuvre of celebrated French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) through a presentation of nearly 100 paintings and drawings dating from 1945 to 1984, including densely textured all-over abstractions as well as many of the highly expressive primitivist depictions of the human figure for which the artist is best known. Good reproductions of the exhibited works are prefaced by an examination of the subversive philosophical and aesthetic values informing Dubuffet's artistic vision and a discussion of his output during his residence in Vence in the late 1950s.
