ELS LIMITS DEL MUSEU (The Ends of the Museum). Fundacio Antoni Tapies, Barcelona, 1995. 248 pp. with 154 ills. (58 col.). 28 x 22 cm. ISBN 8488786050 Trilingual in Catalan, English and Spanish (captions and complete entries bilingual in Catalan and English only).
Highlighting changing perceptions of the function and viability of the museum in the modern art world, this catalogue documents an exhibition composed of works that variously question the role of the museum as a cultural institution and challenge traditional concepts of art, including numerous installations and other pieces produced chiefly over the past decade by Christian Boltanski, Ilya Kabakov, Louise Lawler, Marcel Broodthaers, Dan Graham, Janine Antoni, Sophie Calle, Francesc Torres and six other international artists. Three essays discussing the impact of political, economic and cultural forces on current museum practices are augmented by numerous texts that include interviews with and statements by many of the featured artists and critical commentaries on several of the exhibited pieces, which range from an installation of video monitors modeled on an institutional security system to photographs by Joan Fontcuberta presented by the artist as the work of Miro, Picasso and Tapies.
