A significant exploration of the achievements of Romanian painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries, this catalogue showcases 190 works by Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ioan Andreescu, Gheorghe Petrascu, Hans Mattis-Teutsch, Victor Brauner and nearly 40 other artists, presenting portraits, landscapes, genre studies, religious and historical tableaux, still lifes and abstractions ranging in style from Romanticism to Surrealism. Excellent reproductions of the exhibited works (drawn exclusively from Romanian public collections) are accompanied by profiles of the featured artists, a review of Romania's complex history, and six essays that examine developments in Romanian art during the 19th and 20th centuries in the context of the country's distinctive cultural heritage and in relation to contemporaneous European trends.
