JEFF WALL. Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 1995. Organized and published in association with Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris, and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. 96 pp. with 43 ills. (39 col.). 27 x 22 cm. ISBN 0854881131 Bilingual in English and French.
Showcasing large-scale, staged photographic tableaux produced from 1989 to 1995 by well-known Canadian artist Wall (b. 1946), this catalogue features full-page reproductions and numerous detail views of 20 works that range from subtly disquieting landscapes and studies of mundane events to depictions of elaborately composed scenes of violence. Two critical essays analyze the ambiguous commentaries on social, political and existential themes embodied in Wall's photographs and explore the conceptual and aesthetic concerns informing his complex manipulations of pictorial conventions.
