THE ART OF PETER VOULKOS. Rose Slivka and Karen Tsujimoto. Oakland Museum, 1995. Published in association with Kodansha International Ltd., Tokyo, and Kodansha America, Inc., New York. 192 pp. with 119 ills. (50 col.). 31 x 24 cm. LC 94-49711 ISBN 477001807X In English.
Celebrating the pioneering achievements of influential American artist Voulkos (b. 1924), a central figure in the establishment of ceramic sculpture as a distinctive contemporary art form, this catalogue showcases some 85 works that include examples of the highly expressive abstract pieces for which Voulkos achieved international acclaim in the 1950s, a selection of his large-scale bronze sculptures, and many of the roughly modeled, torn and punctured plates and "stacks" that have dominated his work of the past two decades. Excellent illustrations of the featured sculptures are accompanied by a substantial examination of Voulkos's career and a detailed study of the large body of wood-fired pieces he has produced since the late 1970s.
