Published in conjunction with an exhibition inspired by the multifaceted writings of Frantz Fanon (1925-1961), a black French philosopher, psychiatrist and political activist who focused in his work on the social and psychological repercussions of colonialism, this catalogue includes recent photographs, installations, performance pieces and films by Renee Green, Sonia Boyce, Glenn Ligon, Lyle Ashton Harris and 13 other American and British minority artists. Four essays discuss the resonance in contemporary art of Fanon's provocative ideas and the transgressive strategies employed by the featured figures in their explorations of political, racial and gender-related issues.
