JAMES BROWN. Ed. by Danilo Eccher. Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea, Trento, 1995. Published in association with Electa, Milan. 206 pp. with 149 ills. (96 col.). 27 x 24 cm. ISBN 8843552864 In Italian; essay also in English. (Critical anthology in Italian with eleven texts also in English, five also in French, one also in Spanish and one also in German.)
Reviews the career of noted New York painter Brown (b. 1951) through a presentation of nearly 150 paintings, mixed-media compositions and other works produced by the artist from 1982 to 1994, the selection including early primitivist renderings of totemic figures and mask-like heads, monochromatic and patterned abstractions overpainted with obscure gestural images, and compositions combining geometric and organic forms with textile fragments and found photographs. Good reproductions of the featured works accompany an essay discussing the spiritual and mythic dimensions of Brown's symbolic imagery and an extensive selection of critical texts (1983-1992) illuminating the development of the artist's oeuvre.
