OEHLEN, WILLIAMS 95. Thomas Crow et al. Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio State University, Columbus, 1995. 172 pp. with 119 ills. (12 col.). 26 x 21 cm. LC 94-74635 ISBN 1881390098 In English.
Accompanying an exhibition collaboratively curated by German painter Albert Oehlen (b. 1954) and American photographer Christopher Williams (b. 1956), this catalogue presents full-page reproductions of 16 stylistically hybrid compositions of overlapping abstract and figurative forms by Oehlen and of 15 photographs by Williams that range from close-up studies of botanical subjects and views of a Swiss dam to a series of portraits of a young Japanese woman. Five essays include an analysis of the interrelated roles of the artist and the curator, an examination of the resonance in Oehlen's paintings of musical, architectural and cinematic forms, and a discussion positioning Williams's "anti-expressive" oeuvre in relation to Conceptual art and the works of such prewar photographers as Renger-Patzsch and Sander.
