Surveying innovative mixed-media installations and other works produced by noted French artist Messager (b. 1943) from 1971 to 1994, this catalogue presents pictorial documentation of more than 20 diverse pieces that include dense photographic installations of fragmentary images of the human body, multi-panel arrangements of framed drawings and handwritten texts, and displays of surrealistic sculptural objects and stuffed animals. Two substantial essays trace the course of Messager's career while discussing such topics as her frequent use of transgressive and carnivalesque imagery to explore the nature of personal, sexual, social and political identity and the influence of such artists as Redon, Dubuffet and Breton on the development of her oeuvre.
