FLORINE STETTHEIMER: MANHATTAN FANTASTICA. Elisabeth Sussman et al. Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 1995. Distributed by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York. 144 pp. with 77 ills. (35 col.). 28 x 20 cm. LC 95-15670 ISBN 0810968150 In English.
Reassessing the achievements of a long-neglected American painter whose oeuvre embodies an individualistic blending of naive and modernist elements, this catalogue illustrates some 50 canvases produced by Stettheimer (1871-1944) from 1915 to 1942, including elegantly stylized portraits of family members and fellow artists as well as fantastic images of New York social gatherings. Three lengthy essays (one reprinted) include a detailed account of Stettheimer's career and her association with Marcel Duchamp and the avant-garde circles of the New York art world, a discussion of her idiosyncratic imagery and innovative treatment of time and space, and an examination of the social issues reflected in her work.
