Exploring the diverse visions of landscape reflected in depictions of the San Francisco area from the 1890s to the 1990s, this catalogue presents illustrations of some 175 paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures by such artists as Hassam, Rivera, Sheeler, Hopper, Lange, Adams, Diebenkorn, Estes and Thiebaud while also documenting environmental projects, video installations, landscape designs and other works. Seven substantial essays trace the history of land development in the Bay Area, discuss in detail the evolution of landscape traditions in the region from late 19th-century pastoral painting through Conceptual art, and examine the treatment of landscape subjects by Bay Area photographers.
