Examining Etienne-Jules Marey's groundbreaking scientific experiments in the photographic depiction of motion and the impact of his work on the development of cinema and modern art, this catalogue presents illustrations of chronophotographic images and devices created by the renowned French physiologist (1830-1904) and other 19th-century figures along with a small selection of renderings of movement by such artists as Kupka, Duchamp and Pol Bury. Six essays include examinations of Marey's theories and techniques, an assessment of his role in cinematic history and a discussion of parallels between his motion studies and the aesthetic principles of Futurism and other early modern art movements.
