VICTOR BRAUNER, 1903-1966. Ed. by Dominique Stella. Galleria Credito Valtellinese, Milan, 1995. Organized in association with Centre Culturel Francais di Milano et al. Published by Edizioni Gabriele Mazzotta, Milan. 192 pp. with 151 ills. (68 col.). 27 x 23 cm. ISBN 8820211297 Bilingual in Italian and French (captions in Italian or French only).
Extensively reviews the oeuvre of prominent Romanian-French artist Brauner through a presentation of 74 paintings, drawings and other works dating from 1926 to 1966, among them Surrealist images with strong affinities to the paintings of de Chirico and Dali as well as many of the totemic, often erotically charged depictions of hybrid human and animal figures that dominated his work from the 1940s to the 1960s. Full-page reproductions of the exhibited pieces are prefaced by eight texts that include a critical overview of Brauner's career, discussions of his formative years in Romania and of his involvement with the Parisian Surrealists in the 1930s, and tributes by associates of the artist.
