PIERRE ROY: NANTES, 1880-MILAN, 1950. Musee des Beaux-Arts, Nantes, 1994. Published in association with Somogy editions d'art, Paris. 160 pp. with 136 ills. (72 col.). 28 x 23 cm. LC 95-147006 ISBN 2850562246 In French.
Extensively reviewing the achievements of a prominent figure in the Surrealist movement in France, this catalogue presents good reproductions of more than 60 canvases and a small selection of works on paper produced by Roy over the course of his career, including many symbolic still lifes and interiors that feature juxtapositions of incongruous objects, trompe l'oeil elements and unconventional treatments of perspective and scale. Two essays exploring Roy's enigmatic oeuvre in the context of his association with de Chirico and his links to the Neue Sachlichkeit artists and such British painters as Edward Wadsworth are supplemented by a lengthy biographical chronology, two brief texts by the artist and an anthology of critical commentaries on his work.
