Presenting a scholarly exploration of the achievements and legacy of renowned Greek artist Lysippus, the preeminent sculptor to the court of Alexander the Great, this massive catalogue documents some 275 Greek and Roman sculptures, coins, medals and other objects consisting primarily of works modeled on Lysippus's creations (virtually none of which have survived) along with a broad selection of paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings illustrating his continued impact on artists from the 16th to the 19th century. Extensive descriptions and excellent reproductions of the featured pieces are accompanied by eleven essays that include discussions of Lysippus's artistic innovations in the context of Greek culture of the 4th century B.C., a series of texts examining the famous Farnese Hercules, and an evaluation of the influence of Lysippus on Michelangelo.
