CILDO MEIRELES. Institut Valencia d'Art Modern, Centre del Carme, Valencia, 1995. 180 pp. with 199 ills. (117 col.). 26 x 22 cm. LC 95-157278 ISBN 8448208374 Bilingual in Spanish and English (complete entries in Spanish only).
Reviewing the career of a prominent Brazilian artist whose evocative, often politically and socially engaged sculptural works reflect the influence of Duchamp and conceptual art, this catalogue presents illustrations of some 50 sculptures and installations produced by Meireles (b. 1948) from 1966 to 1992, the selection encompassing such diverse pieces as a display of colored spheres covered with a blanket of wire mesh, a domestic environment filled exclusively with red furnishings, and installations composed of thousands of coins, rulers or clocks. An interview with Meireles and an essay emphasizing his career-long interest in formal issues of space, matter and time are augmented by commentaries by the artist on many of the featured pieces.
