CHAIM SOUTINE. Ed. by Rudy Chiappini. Museo d'Arte Moderna, Villa Malpensata, Lugano, 1995. Published in association with Electa, Milan. 202 pp. with 106 ills. (82 col.) and 82 reference ills. 28 x 25 cm. ISBN 8843551620 In English.
This broad review of the psychologically charged oeuvre of renowned Russian painter Soutine (1893-1943) presents excellent full-page reproductions and individual analyses of 82 oils executed over the course of the artist's career in France, the selection featuring highly expressive, heavily impastoed landscape images, portraits and still lifes drawn from international public and private collections. Six essays discuss the artistic affinities between Soutine and such painters as Van Gogh, Courbet and Rembrandt, his independence from the art movements of his time, the "obsessive" themes reflected in his paintings of animal carcasses and in his portraits, and the personal issues underlying his often difficult relationships with dealers and patrons.
