Illuminates the achievements of Danish artist Ancher through a presentation of 155 paintings and oil sketches dating from the 1870s to the 1920s, including many luminous studies of the everyday activities of women of the time as well as portraits and depictions of outdoor scenes executed in a vibrant, Impressionist-influenced style. Excellent reproductions of the exhibited pieces are preceded by four essays discussing Ancher's career as a woman artist in late 19th-century Denmark, the primary themes and motifs in her work, the impact of her studies in Paris with Puvis de Chavannes on the course of her development, and the relationship of her artistic interests to those of her husband, painter Michael Ancher.
