Highlighting the significant body of work produced by renowned French painter Champaigne (1602-1674) for the Jansenist convent of Port-Royal, this scholarly catalogue presents reproductions and detailed individual discussions of some 30 canvases that include austere treatments of biblical themes and numerous portraits of prominent members of the ascetic Catholic sect while also documenting a selection of engravings after lost paintings by the artist. Three essays discuss Champaigne's close association with Port-Royal and the impact of Jansenism on his stylistic development, trace his critical fortunes from the 17th to the 20th century, and examine the use of engravings of his works as illustrations to Jansenist texts.
