RICHARD MORTENSEN: MALERI/PAINTING, 1929-1993. Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, 1994. Organized and published in association with Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Arhus. 196 pp. with 139 ills. (88 col.). 30 x 27 cm. LC 94-206571 ISBN 8775510863 Bilingual in Danish and English.
Thoroughly exploring the oeuvre of a renowned Danish concrete painter (1910-1993) who played a leading role in abstract art movements in Denmark and Paris, this catalogue features excellent reproductions of some 85 canvases that include examples of Mortensen's early expressionistic and Surrealist compositions as well as a broad selection of the brilliantly colored abstractions he produced over the last four decades of his career, many of the works featuring dynamic configurations of intersecting planes and lines. Supplemented by a 1970 interview with the artist and a series of reminiscences by his widow, five essays include a substantial critical overview of Mortensen's stylistic concerns, an assessment of his impact on the Parisian art world of the 1950s, and a discussion of his links to prominent Danish critic Sigurd Schultz.
