Examining a method of "automatic painting" originated in the mid-1930s by Spanish artist Dominguez, who produced images evoking fantastic landscapes, grottoes or underwater growths by pressing pigment between sheets of paper, this catalogue presents fine reproductions of more than 100 "decalomanias" and related works created by Dominguez, Andre Breton, Max Ernst, Hans Bellmer, Georges Hugnet, Roland Penrose and other Surrealists. An anthology of previously published critical texts supplements seven essays discussing the art historical antecedents of automatism and exploring the diverse symbolism suffusing the featured works.
