Illuminating the role of Lecce as a center of artistic activity in southeastern Italy during the 17th and 18th centuries, this catalogue showcases more than 100 paintings by Antonio Verrio, Giovanni Andrea Coppola, Ribera, Solimena, Giordano, Giaquinto and other Apulian and Neapolitan artists while also documenting some 180 ceramic pieces, liturgical objects in silver, vestments and sculptures produced during the Baroque era. Illustrations and scholarly descriptions of the exhibited works are accompanied by fifteen essays that include analyses of developments in each of the featured media as well as discussions of such topics as the strong influence of Neapolitan artists on the rise of Baroque styles in Lecce, the activities of local patrons, and musical and literary trends in the region.
