Exploring the enduring popularity of the myth of Orpheus in European art and highlighting the varied treatment of the subject by artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, this catalogue documents 163 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures depicting scenes from the life of the legendary Thracian musician, including pieces by such figures as Savery, Giordano, David, Ingres, Delacroix, Redon, Moreau, Rodin, Vallotton, Bourdelle and Zadkine. Scholarly individual examinations of most of the featured works amplify thirteen essays that review the interpretation of Orphic themes by artists from antiquity to the present and examine in detail such topics as the depiction of Orpheus and Eurydice by Cocteau, the significance of the image of Orpheus in the poetry of Mallarme, Valery and Rilke, and the role of the myth in the early history of opera.
