Surveying the late career of a German painter noted for his provocative Neue Sachlichkeit portraits of the 1920s and 30s, this catalogue presents more than 80 paintings, drawings and prints produced by Schad (1894-1982) from 1942 to 1981, the selection encompassing Cubist and Expressionist figure studies as well as numerous compositions reflecting the evolution of his distinctive style of portraiture. Good reproductions of the featured works are prefaced by six essays that include an overview of Schad's career, a detailed critical appraisal of his postwar achievements and a discussion of his activities as a printmaker during the last decades of his life.
