Thoroughly surveying the varied oeuvre of well-known Italian sculptor Fausto Melotti (1901-1986), this catalogue features full-page reproductions of some 125 sculptures and reliefs produced by the artist from 1930 to 1974 along with 27 of his early drawings, the works ranging from expressively modeled terra-cotta studies of figures positioned in shallow, box-like frames and Constructivist-influenced plaster reliefs to delicate abstract sculptures composed of metal rods, small spheres and flat rectangular and circular shapes. A critical essay discussing the aesthetic and philosophical values informing Melotti's explorations of form and space is augmented by an extensive biographical chronology and an anthology of excerpts from the artist's writings.
