OP ALBERTO SAVINIO: MUSICIAN, WRITER AND PAINTER. Paolo Baldacci et al. Paolo Baldacci Gallery, New York, 1995. 126 pp. with 101 ills. (21 col., one foldout). 31 x 25 cm. ISBN 188715700X In English.
Surveying the oeuvre of Italian artist Savinio (1891-1952), who along with his brother Giorgio de Chirico played a leading role in the development of the Pittura Metafisica movement in the 1910s and 20s, this catalogue features full-page reproductions of 21 paintings by Savinio dating chiefly from the late 1920s and early 30s that include symbolic images of mythological figures, fantastic conglomerations of landscape forms and enigmatic objects, and Surrealist portrayals of human figures with animal heads or distorted features. A chronicle of the early decades of Savinio's career as a painter, composer and author accompanies two essays outlining his primary pictorial themes and examining the shared philosophical values embodied in his musical compositions and in de Chirico's paintings prior to World War I.
